The 10 most popular dog names in Wales

Did you know, one in five people spend more than two hours choosing a name for their dog. Agria Pet Insurance for the Kennel Club’s Eukanuba Discover Dogs event released the 10 most popular dog names in Wales. Did your dog’s name make the list?

1. Bella

The beautiful Bella has been crowned the most popular dog name in Wales. Bella has grown in popularity over the last few years, particularly after the massive vampire-in-love phenomenon known as Twilight. Bella is related to the Italian and Latin words for beautiful. It is also related to the name Belle, which means beautiful in French.

2. Lola

Yes I started singing the Kinks too, “Lola la la la la Lola”. A Spanish name meaning strong woman or ‘lady of sorrows’. Plenty of celebrities are gravitating towards this exotic-sounding name for their babies, so it makes sense for us to gravitate to this for our fur babies right?

3. Poppy

We love this cute, pretty little name which is also known for our gorgeous remembrance flower. At the end of the First World War, poppies were the first flowers to grow in the Flanders battlefields. The Poppy represents hope and courage, the perfect name for our best furiend. Remembrance day falls on Saturday 11th November so remember to take your Poppy out for a walk with pride.

4. Alfie

Alfie comes from the Old German for an elf or magical counsel; ready for battle and noble. The first thing we think of when we see this cheeky name is Alfie Moon from Eastenders. Got a cat too? You got Kat and Alfie. This name is currently one of the most popular baby names in the UK too.

5. Ruby

“Ruby,”Ruby,”Ruby,”Ruby – Ahhhhh” That’s a song by the Kaiser Chiefs, by the way, I haven’t just gone typo crazy. The name Ruby comes from the precious red gemstone, perfect for that little treasure in your life.

8. Molly

A classically cute name, short for Mary or Margret. It means a wished-for-child, star of the sea or rebellious – perfect if your pup is super cheeky! It’s been around since the Middle Ages and has a lovely Irish and Gaelic feel to it. This name did not appear in the UK’s top 10 names.

9. Charlie

Cheeky Charlie, one of the friendliest names on the planet. It’s short for the very posh name, Charles, which means free man. Famous for Charlie Brown (Peanuts), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (which is ironic cause our dogs can’t eat chocolate) or even the famous Charlie Chaplin.
