The New Forest is one of the UK’s most dog-friendly destinations, packed with ancient woodland, open heathland, peaceful riversides and scenic coastal trails. Whether you’re planning a New Forest staycation, or just visiting for the day, it’s the perfect place to stretch your legs and explore with your dog by your side.
This beautiful National Park is famous for its free-roaming ponies, wildlife-rich landscapes and welcoming attitude towards dogs – and we’ve sniffed out three of the best walking routes to enjoy together. From towering redwoods to historic riverside paths and breezy sea walls, each walk brings something a little different.
So grab the lead, pack some treats, and head out on one (or all!) of these unforgettable dog-friendly walks in the New Forest. We’ve even popped them on a handy Google Map to help you plan your next adventure.
1. Rhinefield Ornamental Drive Walk
Best for: Forest bathing, shaded trails and giant Redwoods
This peaceful woodland walk takes you through the impressive Rhinefield Ornamental Drive, where towering Douglas firs and Redwoods line the route. It’s a circular loop that feels calm and serene, perfect for recharging while your dog explores the surroundings.
There’s plenty of space for off-lead exploring (just keep an eye out for ponies and wildlife), and the route is mostly shaded – ideal on warmer days.
📍 Start point: Blackwater Car Park
🐾 Route type: Circular, easy, flat
2. Buckler’s Hard Riverside Walk
Best for: Gentle riverside strolls and historical charm
This scenic dog-friendly riverside walk starts from the historic village of Beaulieu and follows the River. The wide gravel paths and peaceful views make it a relaxing route for dogs who enjoy a calm environment.
You can follow the waymarked trail to Buckler’s Hard and back (around 4 miles total), or turn around earlier. There are also dog-friendly cafés and pubs at Buckler’s Hard, or visit Monty’s at the Montagu Arms Hotel, ideal for a post-walk treat.
📍 Start point: Beaulieu Car Park
🐾 Route type: Linear, easy, flat
3. Keyhaven & Pennington Marshes Coastal Walk
Best for: Sea air, salt marshes and doggy paddles
For dogs who love a bit of coastal adventure, the Keyhaven and Pennington Marshes walk offers wide open space, sea views and lots of sensory enrichment. The flat route follows the sea wall through a nature reserve, with views of the Isle of Wight on clear days.
While on-lead walking is recommended due to nearby wildlife, there are quiet spots where dogs can dip their paws into the sea.
📍 Start point: Keyhaven Car Park
🐾 Route type: Linear, flat but stoney, moderate
Whether your dog prefers woodland wonder, riverside calm or coastal breeze, these New Forest walks promise tails will be wagging. Each route offers something a little different, with plenty of opportunity for off-lead fun and fresh air.
