Imagine sharing the joy and companionship of your beloved dog with those in need, all while deepening your bond and giving back to your community. This guide, Laura and her delightful Labrador Arlo will walk you through the heartwarming journey of transforming your dog into a certified therapy dog with Pets As Therapy (PAT). If you cherish your time with your canine friend and are curious about how you both can contribute positively to others’ lives, read on to discover how to embark on this fulfilling adventure.
Our Leap into Volunteering
Arlo, bless his heart, has always been a quick learner. He breezed through his obedience training, snagging his Bronze and Silver awards from the Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme faster than you could say “fetch.” True to his Labrador nature – bright yet wonderfully silly – he thrives on human interaction, especially with kids. My gut told me there was something special there, a gift I had to nurture.
One spring evening, whilst scrolling through Instagram, my curiosity was piqued by a post about a PAT dog. “What in the world is ‘PAT’?” I thought. Good ol’ Google came to the rescue, leading me to insights on how to become a therapy dog in the UK, the volunteering process, and the sheer impact these dogs have. It seemed perfect; not only could I encourage Arlo’s love for people, but we could also give a little back to our local area.
Then, the doubts crept in. Arlo, as fantastic as he is, was still a pup at heart, prone to the occasional mischief. But, curiosity won over, and we signed up, intrigued to see where this journey could take us. That’s when we discovered the Read2Dogs scheme, which felt like it was made for Arlo, given his gentle nature around children, a trait as ingrained in him as his love for treats.
Our Volunteer Story
The day of our assessment was nerve-wracking. What if Arlo decides today’s the day to show off his jumping skills on an unsuspecting visitor? Thankfully, the testers put us right at ease. Arlo, in his element, charmed them with his impeccable food manners and his calmness even when a toddler decided he was the most huggable being on earth.
After a heartwarming discussion, it was clear: a Read2Dogs placement was the way to go. I’d always dreamt of Arlo spreading joy in hospitals and retirement homes. However it seemed his current calling was with children, a mission we were both excited to embark on.
The Next Chapters
From then on, it was all about us finding our perfect placement. This proved to be a challenge and an adventure, all rolled into one. We started our quest with local schools, eventually finding our spot in a place that felt like coming home – my own primary school. The experience has been nothing short of magical, from leading assemblies to Arlo becoming a beloved figure in the playground.
Reflections and Moments to Cherish
Not every day is perfect in the world of therapy dogs, but the rewards are immeasurable.
There’s this one golden memory, shining bright among so many, that I’ll carry with me always. One of the teachers, brimming with excitement, rushed over to share a photo of a child, nestled in the cosy embrace of the class reading corner, book in hand. This wasn’t just any day for him; he was selecting his book for the next week. A feat that, until his encounter with Arlo, was as rare as a quiet moment in a house with a Labrador. The teacher’s words echoed the weight of the milestone.
We’ve navigated challenges and found our rhythm. Above all, brought the joy of reading to children who needed just a bit of encouragement.

Do Therapy Dogs Get Paid in the UK?
Therapy dogs volunteer their time and love. That means they don’t receive payment for their invaluable services. However, the rewards? Absolutely priceless! The joy and comfort they bring to individuals in hospitals, schools, retirement homes, and more are their real earnings. Plus, the emotional bond and the shared experiences between you and your therapy dog are treasures money can’t buy. So, while it might not boost your bank balance, the emotional and social dividends are enormous.
