Finding the Perfect Bed for Your Furry Travel Companion

In a world that seems to be revolving more rapidly each day, the importance of a calm and comfy environment for our furry friends is something we can’t afford to overlook – especially when we’re on holiday. We’ve teamed up with our pals Ralph & Co, the sleep doggy specialists, to share tips and tricks on keeping your dog comfortable while on the move.

With more choice than ever when it comes to adventuring with your dog, there’s no better time to get out in nature and explore the wealth of dog friendly beauty spots right here in the UK. More and more, people are choosing to take their dogs away with them on holiday. Airbnb’s latest figures show a 47% surge in pet-friendly bookings year on year.

Dogs have a much shorter lifespan than we do, so what is just a holiday to us means more to them. So, take your dog on an adventure this summer. They’re the perfect partner for any adventure, full of positivity and enthusiasm for the journey, not the destination.

Anyone who has a dog will tell you that they like to live in the moment, and getting them to calm down when in new environments can be tricky. But comfort is king when it comes to getting your dog to actually use their bed. This becomes even more important when you are travelling with your dog, and you need them to stay in one spot for periods of time.

Whether you’re on the road to your destination, or looking for a comfortable place for your dog to rest once you arrive at your holiday destination, there are a few considerations to help you choose the right bed for your trip.

For Calm Car Journeys

So when it comes to travelling with your dog, which is better – a pillow or nest bed?

When it comes to choosing the right dog bed for car journeys, the answer depends on a variety of factors, including the size of your car and shape of the seats.

If your dog sits on a seat, an appropriately sized nest bed may give them just the cushioning they need to settle in for a long drive. However if they sit in the boot of the car, it may be worth investing in a pillow bed, to allow them to stretch out in peace.

Regardless of where your dog is positioned in the car, it’s important to attach a seatbelt to their harness to keep them safe. According to the Highway Code, animals must be suitably restrained when travelling in a moving vehicle. Best of all, seatbelts for dogs can be bought in a range of shops, from Pets at Home to Halfords.

For a Deep Night Sleep Away From Home

Once you arrive at the hotel or rented accommodation, you may find that even if they are dog friendly, they ask that your dog keep off the bed. This is where it pays to bring along a good quality bed for your dog to rest in, as they are less likely to jump on the furniture in the first place.

Introducing the bed to your dog ahead of your holiday helps keep your pet calm. They will be able to smell the familiar scent of home on their bed, making them more likely to settle there.

Our Summer Travel Essentials

Planning a summer adventure? Here’s our top travel essentials for travelling with dogs:

Good Quality Blanket

We recommend a good quality blanket to protect your car from sandy paws – with cosy sherpa wool on one side, and the finest upholstery on the other, the Richmond blanket makes for the perfect accessory, perfect for days out and all of life’s adventures. protecting your car on trips to the beach.

Couple of Sturdy Beds

Over time leads can become frayed, and a wonderful day out could be spoiled by your dog’s lead breaking when you least expect it. Check your lead for fraying or damage before you leave the house, and if you’re away from home for several days, consider packing a spare lead.

Our advice? Avoid a retractable dog lead, they can be unsafe and even cause neck damage to your dog if you attach it to their collar. They are also difficult to check for damage. Our luxurious collection of dog leads are extremely sturdy due to the quality of leather used and are available in a range of stylish colours.

Fragrance-free Wet Wipes

Sick happens. Trust us, when you’re on the road and your dog starts to grumble, and there’s nowhere to pull over and give them a bit of fresh air, you’ll be glad to have packed the extra pack of wet wipes. Be sure to buy fragrance-free to avoid upsetting your dog with toxic chemicals.
