Winter is coming! 6 Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe in the Snow

Trip to winter nature. Young man in warm clothes is walking with his labrador in snowy forest.

Are you afraid your dog’s vulnerable paws will freeze in the snow? What if there are solutions that make winter a breeze for both you and your pup? This post will share what you need to know about keeping your dog safe in the snow this coming winter.

With these 6 tips in mind, you can ensure your pup is safe and warm all season long. And most importantly, enjoy your walks in the snow together!

How to walk your dogs in the snow?

1. Use A Paw Protection

When winter arrives, it’s important to be mindful of your dog’s paws. Not only can the snow cause them to slip and slide, but the salt used to treat icy pathways can be painful and harsh on their paw pads.

Dog boots or shoes provide extra padding and insulation against the elements, like ice and salt. They also protect their feet from any sharp material on the ground that could injure them.

Another solution is a dog paw balm, specifically formulated for dogs to help keep their paws safe and healthy in the snow. Most dog owners prefer a paw balm over boots as this is more comfortable for a dog.

2. Get Them a snowsuit

Although some owners may dislike the idea of dressing up their pup, a snowsuit helps keep them warm on their winter walks. Not all dog breeds have thick coats, so a coat is essential for keeping their body temperatures regulated in the snow.

When purchasing a snowsuit for your pup, make sure it fits properly. It should provide freedom of movement while keeping your pup warm and dry. It’s also important they still can do their business without making a messy situation!

Combining a dog snowsuit with attached boots and you have your dog set up for a cosy winter!

3. Avoid icy and cold surfaces

Just as we are prone to slip and fall on icy surfaces, the same applies to our furry friends.

Make sure to look out for slippery sidewalks and paths when taking your pup for a walk. The best solution is walking them on a grassy patch of land instead, as the grass will provide them with more traction and stability.

If you do need to walk your pup on icy surfaces, take it slow and steady. Avoid having your pup run around on the ice as they could easily slip and injure themselves.

Especially avoid lakes, ponds, and other bodies of water that could have a thin layer of ice on the top. Dogs may think these are just regular surfaces, but they can quickly sink in if their weight is too much for the ice to carry.

4. Introduce the snow gradually

If your pup is new to the snow, be sure to introduce them to it slowly. Start off by letting your pup walk in a shallow layer of snow before they get into any deeper piles.

This will help them adjust their body and paw movements accordingly, making it easier for them to navigate through the snow. And don’t forget to reward them with a treat after they do a good job!

5. Make sure you have the right supplies

Just because it’s not a hot day outside, does not mean your pup will not get thirsty. Carry a few bottles of water with you during your winter walks and make sure to provide them with regular breaks throughout the walk.

If it’s a particularly cold day, bring some warm blankets that can be used if your pup needs to take an extra break or has trouble warming up after their time in the snow.

6. Heat your dog’s paws after the walk

It may be inevitable to clean your pup’s paws after a long walk in the snow. If they do get wet, it’s best to dry and warm their feet up as soon as possible. You can do this by wrapping them in a towel and then using a hair dryer set on low heat for about 5-10 minutes.

This will help prevent any frostbite from affecting your four-legged friend’s feet. And, of course, a cosy blanket and cuddles are always welcome after a winter walk!

Should you worry about walking your dog in the snow?

Just like us humans, measurements should be taken to ensure your pup stays warm and safe in the snow. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy winter activities with your furry friend!

As long as you take the proper steps to protect them from the cold and icy weather, there’s no reason why they can’t have a good time while exploring their snow-filled surroundings.

Quite frankly, most dogs love playing in the snow and you will be sure to have a blast as well! So, go ahead and grab your pup’s snowsuit and hit the outdoors for some winter fun!

How do you cosy up with your canine companion?

Winter is a fun time of year, with Christmas lights and warm hot cocoas, but also the snowy walks with our furry friends. With our 6 tips in mind, you will make sure your pup stays safe and warm while having fun in the snow

Just remember to dress them appropriately, avoid any icy surfaces, introduce them to the snow gradually, carry the right supplies, and heat up their paws after a long walk. Your pup will thank you for it! Now go out there and have a blast in the snow with your furry companion!
