We know Dog Furiendly is your go-to spot for all things ‘canine and cool,’ but guess what? We’re stretching our paws into new territory—yes, the enigmatic, the elusive, the ever-so-elegant world of CATS!
Travelling with your doggo is one thing, but taking a journey with your feline friend? That’s a whole different ball of yarn! Cats are creatures of habit, and let’s be honest, they pretty much think they own the place. So, how do you make sure your whiskered companion stays as healthy and happy as a cat with a saucer of cream while you’re on the move?
We’ve teamed up with the pet healthcare moguls at Bob Martin to share some top tips on travelling with a cat and how to keep them healthy and happy on the road:
1. Visit the Vet Before Travel:
Schedule a vet checkup before your trip to ensure your cat is in good health and up to date on vaccinations. Obtain a health certificate or any required travel documents if you’re travelling across international borders.
2. Prepare a Travel Carrier:
Choose a comfortable and well-ventilated carrier that’s large enough for your cat to stand, turn around, and lie down in.
Familiarise your cat with the carrier before the trip by leaving it open at home and placing treats or toys inside.

3. Pack Essential Supplies:
Bring enough food, water, and treats for your cat’s entire journey, including any potential delays.
Carry your cat’s favourite toys, a blanket or bedding with a familiar scent, and a litter box.
4. Maintain a Regular Feeding Schedule:
Stick to your cat’s regular feeding schedule as closely as possible during the trip.
Avoid feeding your cat immediately before travel to reduce the risk of motion sickness.
5. Keep Your Cat Hydrated:
Offer small amounts of water regularly during the trip to prevent dehydration.
Use a spill-proof water dish or a water bottle designed for pets.
6. Plan Rest Stops:
If you’re travelling by car, plan regular rest stops to allow your cat to stretch, use the litter box, and have a break from the carrier.
Ensure your cat is safely secured in the car during the journey.
7. Use a Harness and Leash:
When you stop, use a harness and leash to allow your cat to explore safely under supervision.
Never let your cat roam freely outside, as unfamiliar environments can be dangerous.

8. Maintain a Calm Environment:
Keep the car or travel area as quiet as possible to reduce stress.
Use soft, soothing music and cover the carrier with a towel or blanket to create a sense of security.
9. Be Prepared for Motion Sickness:
Some cats may experience motion sickness during car trips. Consult your vet about possible remedies or medications to ease nausea.
10. Be Mindful of Temperature:
Avoid leaving your cat in a hot car during warm weather or a cold car during winter. Extreme temperatures can be dangerous for pets.
11. Plan Accommodations:
If you’re staying in hotels or accommodations, make sure they are pet-friendly and book in advance.
Keep your cat in the carrier or an enclosed area when in your room to prevent escape.
12. Stay Calm and Patient:
Your cat may be anxious during travel, so remain calm and reassuring to reduce their stress.
Avoid yelling or scolding if your cat exhibits fearful or anxious behaviour.
13. Monitor Your Cat’s Health:
Pay close attention to your cat’s behaviour and health during the trip.
If you notice any signs of distress, illness, or discomfort, seek veterinary care promptly.
Do you travel with your cat?
Remember that each cat is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. When travelling with a cat, it’s essential to know your cat’s preferences and needs to ensure it’s both a safe and comfortable experience. Your furry friend’s wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do at Bob Martin and we hope our tips for trips with your furry friends help create special memories for the future.
