Years dog food has been recalled following reports of dogs developing sudden and severe dry eye, with some owners also reporting loss of vision and blindness. Here’s what we know about the Years dog food recall, the possible link to buckwheat and what to do if your dog eats Years.
Years has issued a voluntary recall of all of its fresh dog food meals following a growing number of reports of dogs developing sudden bilateral dry eye.
Dog Owners Guide has also heard from several different sources about dogs who have lost their sight or gone blind after eating Years dog food. At this stage, it is important to stress that a causal link between Years dog food and these cases has not been proven. An investigation is ongoing, with Years currently looking into a potential association with buckwheat, an ingredient used across its fresh meal range.
However, the advice for anyone currently feeding Years is clear: stop feeding Years fresh dog food immediately, even if your dog is not showing any symptoms.
The dog pictured throughout this article is Reggie, a French Bulldog from @ReggiesDogBlog, who is one of the dogs reported to have suffered serious eye problems after being fed Years. The featured image shows Reggie in happier days, before his eye problems began.
We’ll be sharing more about Reggie’s experience, alongside the stories of other affected dogs and their owners, as we continue to follow this story.

Why has Years been recalled?
Years announced a voluntary recall of all of its fresh Signature Meals on 17 August 2026 following reports of dogs developing sudden bilateral dry eye. The company says that, as of 16th August 2026, it had received 57 suspected reports, affecting approximately 0.1% of its customers.
Years began investigating the issue earlier in August after receiving reports of dogs experiencing a sudden loss of tear production in both eyes. Following an increase in cases, the company made the decision to recall its entire fresh dog food range while investigations continue.
Is Years Dog Food causing Dry Eye in Dogs?
This is currently being investigated.
The condition being reported is sudden bilateral dry eye. Dry eye occurs when a dog’s eyes don’t produce enough tears. Tears are essential for keeping the surface of the eye healthy and protected, meaning severe cases can potentially result in significant damage.
Years says the cases under investigation have involved sudden onset in both eyes, typically with zero tear production. The company has identified a potential association with buckwheat, but this has not yet been scientifically confirmed as the cause.
Have dogs gone blind after eating Years dog food?
Dog Owners Guide has heard from several different sources about dogs partially losing their sight or going completely blind after eating Years dog food. There are also reports being shared amongst affected owners of severe eye problems and loss of vision following diagnoses of sudden dry eye.
However, it is important to make the distinction that it has not currently been proven that Years dog food caused these dogs to go blind.
Years is investigating a potential link between its food, buckwheat and the sudden onset of dry eye. Until that investigation is complete, the exact cause remains unknown. Nevertheless, reports of dogs experiencing serious and potentially permanent eye damage are understandably causing significant concern amongst dog owners.
One of the dogs affected is Reggie, the French Bulldog pictured in this article. His owners have shared images showing the problems he has experienced since being fed Years, a stark contrast to the photograph of Reggie in happier days that we have used as the featured image for this article.
Dog Owners Guide is currently speaking directly to owners of affected dogs, including those reporting loss of vision, and we will update this article as we learn more.
Which Years dog food has been recalled?
The Years dog food recall applies to all fresh Signature Meals. Years treats and Breed Health+ supplements are not currently included in the recall as they do not contain buckwheat.
The company has also paused fresh food subscriptions for an initial six weeks while it reformulates its recipes.
Should I stop feeding Years dog food?
Yes. Years is advising customers to stop feeding all Years fresh meals immediately, regardless of whether their dog is currently showing symptoms.
Do not continue feeding existing meals and do not give them to another dog or animal.
Years says it will arrange collection of unused meals as part of its investigation and provide customers with credit for affected orders. If you’re worried about your dog or have any questions, Years is asking owners to contact its team directly at yap@years.com.
A Facebook group called Years Dry Eye Cases and Info’ has been created for owners concerned about or affected by the issue. I would highly recommend visiting that group, as there are lots of Years customers in the same boat.
We will continue to update this article as we hear from affected owners and as Years releases further information about its investigation.
